We receive many enquiries from the English visitors to the weekly concerts given by the Madeira Mandolin Orchestra as to when they will tour England again. With this in mind they have decided to tour England during July 2009. The orchestra had a successful tour of the South of England in May 2002, which included a concert at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor as part of the Queen’s Golden Jubilee. They have also toured, by invitation, in France, Spain, Portugal and Austria. On this tour they will be accompanied by Portuguese Tenor Carlos Guilherme who has performed with the orchestra on many occasions. The programme will consist of the orchestra playing light classics (e.g. Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Bach etc)and they will accompany Carlos who will sing a selection of Neapolitan songs (for example, O Sole Mio, Santa Lucia and Funiculi Funicula). Mr. Guilherme speaks excellent English and will introduce the songs that way. It is anticipated that the concert would last between1 -1½ hours plus an interval. Established in 1913 it is the oldest established Mandolin Orchestra in Europe, but in terms of average age it is considered to be the youngest in the world; the youngest playing member currently is 10 years of age. It is anticipated that making his touring debut in England will be a young man who is only 7 years old. It is an amateur, mixed group, orchestra but plays very professionally as can be witnessed by the comments in the visitors book. The total number of participants is to be 28, plus instruments – 5-6 guitars, a double bass and some 20 mandolins plus a few spares.
